You can come up with slight variations to the original cabbage soup recipe, but the core principles remain: you must only eat cabbage soup diet for your meals, along with a few low-calorie items.

How It Works

For seven days, you must only consume two bowls of fat-free, sodium-free cabbage soup in addition to some fruits, vegetables, meat and skim milk. Alcohol and juices are strictly prohibited; you must only drink water.

The recipe for cabbage soup varies depending on your weight loss coordinator, but it basically includes cabbage, tomatoes, onions, tomato juice, bouillon and onion soup mix.

Pros and Cons of the Cabbage Soup Diet

Any low-calorie diet will ensure that you will lose weight. Your body will have no choice but to starve and eat itself if it does not receive enough nourishment in the form of the food you eat. The major downside to any starvation diet is the likelihood of a person gaining back the weight lost once they are off the fad diet. In this case, you’re only supposed to follow the cabbage soup diet for one week and then resume better, but healthier eating habits. Since the diet itself does not teach you how to adjust your eating habits and make better lifestyle choices, you can very easily slip into old patterns.
